Education system in Algeria. نظام التعليم في الجزائر
A a great deal of importance is given to the educational sector in Algeria ; seeing its importance in creating civilized citizens. First, kids start going to primary schools at the age of 6, the study
for 6 years then pass an exam in order to be able to go to the middle school.
In middle school they study for 4 years, more subjects are added like English, computer science and civics. An exam has to be passed after those 4 years, it is called the "BEM" Exam or Brevet exam.
Then they pass to the high school, where they will be categorized into 2 streams : literature and science. As the 3rs year is reached the baccalaureate exam has to be passed so that they can move to university to study what they prefer.
It is worthy to mention here, that education in Algeria -unlike many countries- is totally free of charge from primary till university. And under the age of 16, it is obligatory. This reflects the Algerian government's awareness of the importance of education.
